An increase in power was predicted when Apple announced that they were going to switch to "Apple Silicon," but I think it's safe to say that no one expected this:

These are the Geekbench 5 scores for the base model M1 MacBook Air. These scores are among the highest of any Mac laptop, and easily the highest of any laptop that costs one-thousand dollars. In fact, these scores make the 1 thousand dollar M1 MacBook Air, better than a 3 thousand dollar, fully specced MacBook Pro 16in (Intel). This is huge for the consumers because now people can get extremely capable laptops for a fraction of the price. The MacBook Pro (M1) Geekbench results were also leaked:

and these benchmarks actually make the MacBook Air's all the more impressive. The Pros single score barely being better and the multi-core score being a bit worse! However, take this with a grain of salt because since the MacBook Air has no fans, it won't be able to do high powered tasks as long as the Pro, which has a fan. Of course, none of these products are in consumer hands yet, so this is all hypothetical but from what we know, the new generation of MacBooks have huge promise.
